NARS Project Space, 2nd Floor
As part of our Art in Dialogue series, NARS Foundation is pleased to present an CONFLUENCE UNDER BRINE, a performance featuring Yoshie Sugito.
This program offers an opportunity to engage with her exhibition, BONE ASH, MEMORY HOLES, THE RECIPES, on view through November 4 in the Project Space. Visitors are welcome to arrive early to view the exhibition.
Held during the opening reception of BONE ASH, MEMORY HOLES, THE RECIPES, CONFLUENCE UNDER BRINE is a participatory opening performance bringing together the "fermenters"—those who have welcomed the traveling Sichuan picklejars into their homes over the past three years to nurture fermentation alongside microscopic life.
Going beyond merely tracing the physicaljourney of these vessels, the performance delves deep into the concept of the"memory hole"—framing it as the fading memories of individuals andmigrant communities distanced from recorded history, as well as the bodilypractices slowly forgotten in everyday life.
Together with thefermenters, visitors will probe these "holes" of lost memory andwordless voids. By capturing the altered physical senses brought about byfermentation, tactile memories, and raw sonics, participants will translatethese exchanges into new visual and material forms—ultimately generating analternative collective memory.
About the artist:
Berlin-based Japanese visual artist Yoshie Sugito works across painting, sculpture, ceramics, drawing, and participatory installation. Her practice explores cultural difference, miscommunication, and the subtle humor that emerges between different perspectives. In recent years, she has developed participatory projects that gather and archive personal stories, memories, recipes, and lived experiences within local and migrant communities. Through these collaborative processes, Sugito transforms everyday narratives into visual and material forms, exploring connection, belonging, identity, and the complexities of cross-cultural encounters. Her work brings together fragments of language, objects, images, and shared experiences, creating spaces where different perspectives can meet, overlap, and generate new forms of communication.
